USA TOUR FOR LIONS?

USA TOUR FOR LIONS?

18 July 2008

PACK YOUR bags, check your passports and apply for your visa – because Millwall Chairman John Berylson has hinted at an American tour this time next year.

The Boston-based Millwall owner exclusively revealed the early stages of the plans to the ‘News’ this week and intends to investigate it further in the coming weeks. He said: “We are talking about a tour of the US for July next year. We will be looking at who will be available to play us – look at the fixtures and see if it will work.

“It’s probable that it will be the [New England] Revolution that will host it for us as I know the guys in charge.”

With fans licking their lips over a trip across the Atlantic rather than the Irish sea, Berylson added that the proposed trip would be more than a holiday in the sun for the players: “The standard over here is improving, slowly. There are players from the UK coming over here to retire and the hype around David Beckham obviously generated some interest.”

The exciting proposal comes in the week that manager Kenny Jackett revealed to the ‘News’ that two games against Premiership opposition to be played behind closed doors will replace Monday’s cancelled game in Ireland against UCD – beginning with a trip to Reading.

Jackett said: “I began phoning around when the game was off and I am delighted to have got good games against a strong Reading side this Monday and then a game up at Tottenham the following Saturday.

“Those games will be private and behind closed doors but will give me a chance to look at my players, play different combinations and get us ready for the final friendly against Exeter on August 2.”

One man delighted to hear the prospect of the Reading fixture, is Catford-born hoops midfielder Jem Karacan. The nineteen year-old made seven appearances while at the Den on loan at the end of last season said: “I would put my name down, definitely. I would enjoy it and look forward to seeing the lads I haven’t seen for a couple of months.”
