THAT'S NOT BOXING! IT'S SLAPSTICK COMEDY

SLAPSTICK COMEDY was not supposed to top the bill last weekend, but Monte Barrett (pictured right) treated the O2 arena to a moment Frank Spencer or Lee Evans would find hard to top.

In what was supposed to be a moment of athleticism Barrett attempted to bound into the ring by leaping the top rope. But the New Yorker was left on his posterior, and looking sutablily embarrassed, when his stunt went spectacularly wrong as his foot got tangled when making his leap.

Climbing to his feet he bounced around the ring as he tried to block the incident out of his mind, but the howls of derision from the crowd would be hard for any man to ignore.

After the contest Barrett admitted he was laughing inside himself. He said: “What was supposed to happen? Well the ropes should have been tighter than they were. It was okay though, I was laughing myself and I thought ‘Oh Crap.’ I guess I will end up on those bloopers (show).”

He however refused to offer it as an excuse, and said he simply brushed it aside and got on with the job in hand. He added: “I said ‘What the hell?’ as the ropes were so loose, but you know I got my ass back up and you know I went off to the corner. But something like that was not going to stop me.”

His opponent Haye and trainer Booth admitted they did not see the incident, and by the time they got in the ring it was clear it was out of his mind.

Booth said: “When we got in and I saw Monte bounding around, I said to David this guy is going be coming at you and you have to be ready.”

Barrett also admitted that pre-fight differences with the Hayemaker promotion team over hotels and allowances for food had now been settled, and he wished the company and Haye good luck in future contests.

The American added: “I only wish the best for him, boxing is true sportsmanship. The fighters are like gladiators and we try to kill each other, and then have the most respect for each other. It is truly a gladiators sport.”
