THE GOWLETT

THE GOWLETT

14 September 2009

The Gowlett pub is a hidden gem, away from the hustle and bustle of Dulwich. The modern exterior leads you to think that the pub is a modern venue, but it is actually a Victorian pub, writes Jo Parrish...

The drinks
The Gowlett is best known for its wine, two of which are selected by the pub and imported from South Africa. The vegetarian and organic South African wine, Usapho, bares Gowlett's name and comes in white and red. Champagne ranges from £15 and goes up to £35 for a bottle.
A range of ales are available, from £3.40.

The food
Stonebaked homemade pizza prices range between £7.50 for a Margherita and £9 for a chef's special. The most popular pizza is the Gowlettini, which is sold at £8.50. The Gowlettini is layered with melted Mozzarella, Goat’s Cheese, Pine Nuts, Proscuitto and Rocket. There is also a vegetarian version that comes with Sunblushed Tomatoes. Check page 20 (opposite) or Southwark News for a 2 for 1 coupon on pizzas.

The room
In 1973 the walls were knocked through two small pubs and a grocery, turning it into one large pub, the Gowlett. The plum coloured walls and wooden tables with black and green furniture gives a cosy and warm atmosphere.
There is a beer garden and the pub has wifi.

The feel
Jonny Henfrey, manager, describes the Gowlett as a "melting pot", with a range of people varying from "plasterers to plastic surgeons and from scaffolders to stockbrockers". Thursday plays host to the lucky 7's night, where customers are invited to bring along their 7-inch vinyls and can play their favourite music.

  The Manager - Johnny Henfrey
Our punters make and create the Gowlett, it is very chilled. We live by the atmosphere and die by the atmosphere - our ethos is "returning a community local to its changing local community.

  Assistant Manager - Lucas Michski
I know all the regulars and enjoy seeing them and new customers.
On Friday and Saturday we have a drink after work - we are a good team who enjoy working together.

  Regular - John Clarke
I keep coming back because I love my real ale and they look after it really well - there are great people who work here. It's my local. I come here daily. I think it is good to support your local pub or it will close.
