Surrey (11pts) drew with Lancashire (6pts)
RAIN AND bad light spoiled Surrey's chances of making a successful start to their county championship season against Lancashire.
After a dream start by their batsmen with Mark Ramprakash (118), Mark Butcher (120) and Usman Afzaal (134 not out) all making three figures, Surrey declared on 537/5.
However, after a solid performance on the third day and combination of bad light and rain on the final day robbed Alan Butcher's side of the chance to push for a win. Pedro Collins (2/64) was the pick of the bowlers, although Jimmy Ormond would have been proud of his economical 1/56 from 19 overs.
Surrey (0pts) lost to Midllesex (2pts) by 58 runs
A CRUNCHING innings from England's Andrew Strauss was enough to carry Middlesex to a comfortable victory in last weekend's London derby.
Strauss top scored for Middlesex with 163 off just 130 balls, receiving able support from fellow England possibles Ed Joyce (42) and Owais Shah (55 not out). The Surrey bowling came off badly with 40 year old veteran Chris Lewis - forced into action two months ahead of schedule by a flu bug that swept through the squad - taking 0/51 off just six overs. Youngsters Chris Jordan and Jade Dernbach were also expensive, going for more than six an over despite taking a brace of wickets each.
After a solid start from Scott Newman and James Benning, the Surrey innings fell apart with only Mark Butcher (46), Jonathan Batty (21) and Lewis (33) making it into double figures.
The Brown Caps were eventually bowled out for 248 off 43 overs.
