ALAN BUTCHER'S VIEW
I FELT OUR draw against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge was a very positive performance overall.
Throughout the first innings we batted well in difficult circumstances and ended up making them follow on which was excellent.
Although we ended up disappointed I felt that the boys all bowled very well in the second innings and it was just good performances from Graeme Swann and Samit Patel that got the draw for them.
The game also showed just how little there is in the county championship at the moment. Nottinghamshire are top and it was a boost to play like we did against them.
Another positive for us was the maiden fifties scored by Matthew Spriegel and Chris Jordan. Innings like that are good both for the development of the players and the overall team. If a couple of our youngsters could now push on and grab the opportunity to make a place their own before the end of this season it could make our recruitment process a little bit easier.
We’re just starting the Guildford Festival at the moment and will miss Mark Ramprakash for our championship game against Durham. He turned up the ground with some sort of gastric problem and stomach cramps. It’s just one of those unfortunate things caused by something he’s eaten or whatever. He’ll hopefully be back in time for our first Pro40 game on Sunday.
Bearing in mind he’s not playing I initially hoped we could avoid headlines about him trying for his hundredth hundred but then I realised that realistically, they will all be about the fact he’s not playing and therefore has to wait longer!
