MORE SUNDAY MISERY FOR SURREY

24 July 2008

Surrey (0 points) lost to Yorkshire (2 points)

By Jon Surtees

IT WAS another miserable day for Surrey on Sunday as their Pro40 campaign got off to a poor start with a tense eleven run loss to Yorkshire.

After a reasonable bowling performance kept the visitors to a manageable 230 off their forty overs, Surrey were too often behind the rate and the late innings heroics of Jade Dernbach were not quite enough to secure the victory.

With Surrey welcoming back stand-in skipper Mark Ramprakash and giving a one-day debut to top young prospect Jason Roy, holding Yorkshire to under six an over was a reasonable effort.

As so often in the modern one day game, the top bowlers were spinners Matthew Spriegel (1/28) and Chris Schofield (0/34) – who were both able to go for less than five an over – and Usman Afzaal who took 3/43 including the dangerous Anthony McGrath and Tim Bresnan.

However, whilst Surrey did take consistent wickets, it was never quite enough to halt the Yorkshire momentum and the likes of Andrew Gale (44) and McGrath (37) always kept the score ticking over.

When Yorkshire were on the ropes at 171/7, the Brown Caps could have hoped for a happy ending but a good partnership between Adil Rashid (33) and Rich Pyrah (26) took them onto 230.

With a number of big hitters high up in the ranks, Surrey would have been hopeful of chasing that down but with the early losses of Scott Newman (5), James Benning (11) and Mark Ramprakash (1) they were always facing an uphill struggle.

Usman Afzaal (41), Chris Jordan (38) and an excellent knock from Chris Schofield (58 off 44 balls) kept them in the mix but another flurry of wickets with Batty, Schofield and Jason Roy all going, left them staring defeat in the face.
However, Matthew Spriegel and Jade Dernbach never gave up and some lusty hitting from Dernbach (who ended on 19 from just 7 balls) took the Brown Caps to within just twelve runs of their target at the close.
