SURREY STORMED to an emphatic win over Gloucestershire, with Steven Davies hitting a nineteen ball half-century, but it wasn't enough for them to qualify for the last eight of the t20 Friends Provident trophy.
Although Surrey hammered Gloucestershire by six wickets, Hampshire's victory over Sussex was enough to secure the fourth and final qualifying place in the South Division, ahead of Surrey.
The Lions needed a win to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the quarter finals, and they restricted Gloucestershire to 147-9. The pick of the bowlers being Chris Tremlett who took three wickets for an economical eighteen runs.
In the Surrey innings Davies and captain Rory Hamilton-Brown hit 78 runs in six power-play overs, clearly trying to improve their run rate. The skipper was given out LBW to Richard Dawson in the ninth over for 48 runs.
Despite losing Jason Roy and Andrew Symonds in quick succession, Davies marched on to hit 73 off 30 balls including seven fours and four sixes. He was finally caught on the boundary by Aaron Redmond, so it was left to Gary Wilson to come in to hit the winning runs to bring Surrey home.
