TEEN PREGNANCY DROP IS WELCOME

23 March 2012

I am writing to share my delight at the reduction of teenage pregnancy rates in Southwark for 2009/10.

I am glad to see that the actions taken by the previous administration have finally paid off, and have clearly made a real difference to teenage pregnancy rates in the borough.

In Southwark News on 15th March, Cllr Catherine McDonald makes reference to the Teenage Pregnancy Commission she has set up. While this is encouraging in theory, I am concerned about how effectively the commission's recommendations can be implemented, given  Cllr McDonald's decision last year to reduce spending on teenage pregnancy by 54%.

It was claimed that  "allocations of previous years over anticipated the level of need" and yet, as demonstrated by the dramatic fall in conception levels, clearly this funding was well used and had a huge impact.

I really hope that this is not another case of Southwark Labour focusing on spin without considering the real impact of their policies.

Cllr Rosie Shimell, Southwark Liberal Democrats, Shadow Cabinet Member for Education and Children's Services.
