A SHAKESPEAREAN BIRTHDAY PARTY EXTRAVAGANZA

A SHAKESPEAREAN BIRTHDAY PARTY EXTRAVAGANZA

8 April 2008

The iconic Shakespeare's Globe is gearing up to celebrate the Bard's birthday, with a host of special events on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, before launching the 2008 Theatre Season, Totus Mundus, with a stunning riverside celebration on the big day itself, writes Charlie Breslin...

Saturday, April 19, will see the Globe continuing the tradition of Mark Rylance's Sonnet Walks. Walkers, accompanied and entertained by twelve sonneteers, can enjoy two tours of Tudor London; one starting Westminster Abbey and the other from the site of Shakespeare's Theatre in Shoreditch.

The Globe throws open its doors on Sunday 20th to host the annual Birthday Open Day. This free event offers to a wide variety of entertaining activities, ranging from a screening of The Globe's 2007 production of Othello, to costume dressings and entertainment from the Globe's resident musicians. Beyond this, the internationally renowned Footsbarn Theatre Company will provide visitors with a taster of their new show, A Shakespeare Party, specifically devised for performance at the theatre from 23rd-25th May.

While youngsters can take part in an interactive cake decorating workshop, those of a more dramatic nature will be invited to tread the boards and recite some of the Bard's best lines, or take part in a playwriting master-class hosted by playwright Ché Walker, before marking the birthday celebrations with a gigantic game of pass the parcel.

The climax of these celebrations takes place on the big day itself; the 23rd April sees a special Birthday Event taking place on the River Thames. A mini Elizabethan theatre is set to travel up the Thames from Butler's Wharf to the Globe, entertaining the crowds on the riverbank. The celebrations will close with the launch of the 2008 Theatre Season and a performance of Shakespeare's heart-breaking tragedy King Lear.
