WILLIAMS COULD QUIT EVEN IF HE WINS

Peckham Heavyweight Danny Williams has said he could quit the ring after his British Title defence this weekend, even if he successfully defends his title.

Williams will once again take on Essex fighter John McDermott in a rematch of their contest last July, which the Peckham man won in controversial circumstances.

Some curious refereeing saw Williams saved in fifth round after taking an onslaught of punches, before being deducted three points for low blows and spitting out his gum shield.

Despite this Williams rightly won a close decision on the scorecards, much to his opponent's dismay.

However, for this weekends contest in Sunderland a win alone will not be enough for Williams, who stated he has had one of his best training camps ever in the run up to the contest. He added: "If I win this weekend and perform badly then that will be it for me.

There is no point struggling around and losing to people I should not be losing too.
"But I am in great shape. For the last contest I sparred just eighteen rounds, but I have done hundreds this time. That is the same for my sprinting and other work. I have got my body fat down, so if I don't perform I know it will be time to call it quits."

However, the amiable giant doesn't think this scenario will pan out, and stated he expects to knock McDermott out in this contest, in order to prevent any controversy on this occasion.
"As soon as I beat this guy, and I will be looking to take him out quickly in a really good performance, I will be calling out Martin Rogan. As soon as this fight is over that is who I will be looking for."

The 37-year-old Ulsterman has created a stir in the British Heavyweight scene by defeating both Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton in recent months, despite taking up the sport professionally just five years ago.

Rogan has a fight pencilled in to defend his Commonwealth title next month against Sam Sexton, but if he and Williams come through their bouts it will be an intriguing domestic dust up.

Williams’ fight forms part of the Sky Box Office package for the Ricky Hatton v Manny Pacquiao bout, and will be the English undercard that will be shown on Saturday evening.
