FISHER ABC coach Steve Hiser declared himself "very proud" after three of his most promising young boxers narrowly missed out London schoolboys titles last week.
Ted Cheeseman, Tom Fant and Oscar Brown all reached the finals of their respective weight categories at the London regional round of the National Schoolboys Championships in Gorsebrook last Sunday.
And all three can count themselves unlucky not to have claimed their first title after putting in a series of impressive performances against their vastly more experienced opponents.
Cheesman lost out by just one point in his title bout, but only after controversially having two points deducted for ducking into his opponent.
Earlier, the thirteen-year-old had scored the best win of his short career when he out-pointed last year's UK champion Danny Arnold in a tight contest.
"Everyone was full of praise for that performance," said Hiser. "I said to the ref after the final: 'you cost him that title,' because he could have gone on to win the lot."
Fant also narrowly missed in his final out when he lost a split decision having out-scored his semi-final opponent 15-2. The display was even more impressive given the young boxer turned up at the venue thinking he had a bye.
Brown, who did have a bye in his first round, went down 6-4 in another narrow contest in his final.
Despite the defeats, Hiser was justifiably delighted with his charges.
"I am very proud of them all because they have put Fisher back on the map," he said. "It was the first time they have been in the Schoolboys so it should see them good for next year."
Meanwhile, some of the more experienced boxers from the Fisher stable will be in action this Friday when they take on opponents from across London. Amongst those stepping into the ring will be Jimmy Coyle, Jake Brown and Joe Bailey.
