IT COMES IN ALL COLOURS, AS LONG AS YOU CHOOSE RED

8 April 2008

The Design Museum will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Model T Ford this month by placing one of the original, iconic cars in its outdoor Design Museum Tank on the riverfront, writes Charlie Breslin...

This historic display marks a change from the contemporary design pieces usually displayed in the Museum's outdoor tank. The Model T, credited as the first truly affordable automobile, was the world's first car to be mass-produced on a production line, and revolutionised the American motor industry.

This centenary marks the birth of the Model T Ford, developed by Henry Ford in 1908, at the Piquette plant in Detroit. Ford's intention was to create a 'universal car'; the first true family automobile, but beyond this, the conception of the Model T transformed America into an industrial economy and brought about the change from horses to horsepower. By the time production of the Model T came to an end in 1927, more than 15 million of the cars had been sold.

To celebrate the centenary of this world-changing automobile, an original Model T Ford will be on display in the Design Museum Tank until 20th April, and is free to view.
