There is little doubt that Coral Newell deserves to spend Christmas Day with her family, after 40 years of laying on a feast for hundreds of pensioners each year in the SE1 and SE16 area.
Coral has been running the Beormund Centre for decades and the annual Christmas Day dinner is on top of her daily community work. The Christmas Day dinner is often one of the only times that some elderly residents get to come out of their homes. Isolation is more acute during the festive period and this tremendous event is only made possible by donations.
While Coral is looking for people to come and help on the day and even take over the reins, she has told the News that she would be happy to help with organising the event, but wants to spend Christmas Day with her family – especially her grandchildren and new great grandchild.
Even if you cannot give up your Christmas Day you can donate to help fund the day or hold an event to help fundraise for it. Over the coming months the News will feature any events helping to make sure that all our most senior residents are given Christmas cheer.
