London is already feeling the first effects of the decision to quit the European Union, and at a local level, the council is right to appoint a Brexit officer who will try to manage the impact of our departure.
Stephen Douglass will look at how leaving the EU could impact on the local economy, as well as the legal status of the borough’s EU nationals. As Council Leader Peter John points out, in areas of industry such as construction, there is the real possibility that construction work forces could be affected, and we cannot walk into this unprepared.
Whatever your opinion about whether we should leave or stay, Brexit will mean huge changes at both a national and local level. We have two years during which we will all have to get to grips with this new reality – let’s not leave it until that period comes to an end before we start planning for life after the EU.
