At last an effort is to be made to reduce congestion at Elephant & Castle’s roundabout – London’s finest example of a traffic redesign that ended up being worse than the problem it replaced.
Transport for London has announced that ‘The Bend’ will have a new sensor-led traffic light system by October – and that this should reduce waiting times at each junction by eighteen per cent. You have to wonder why this system wasn’t installed in the first place, at such a busy intersection that historically has caused so many traffic problems, and why it took questioning from politicians to get TfL to act.
