I hope that, despite the lockdown, everybody was able to enjoy the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. I know that it was a challenge due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, writes Florence Eshalomi…
I would to like to thank those who did their best to creatively enjoy Easter with their families whilst observing social distancing. There were a few instances across London where parks have been closed because they weren’t being used responsibly.
Although Southwark parks are still open, I would like to reiterate that they must only be used once a day for daily exercise, by yourself or with your household members.
We all have part to play in fighting the spread of this disease across Southwark. We still need to follow guidance of NHS, by keeping up our personal hygiene, and washing our hands with soap. We still need to follow the government’s instructions to stay home and only leave for shopping for food and necessities (as infrequently as possible), exercise once a day, medical needs, and commuting to work (and only if absolutely necessary).
Ordinarily the end of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend marks a return to school. Due to the pandemic, most children have been at home for a few weeks now. I would like to highlight the amazing work of Southwark’s Schools Support team, and teachers in the borough, who are doing an incredible job, helping schools to remain open for those who need them most and helping to set up care hubs when schools are unable to open.
The outbreak has affected the financially stability of many employees and businesses across Southwark. The mayor’s commitment to the recovery of London businesses, alongside the government’s job guarantee scheme, mean that there is some support available.
I would like to urge everybody to use verifiable sources when looking for support or updates. Please continue to check the Southwark Council and government websites to stay updated.
I would like to express my continued gratitude to all the NHS staff and other key workers who are on the front-line, battling to get us through this crisis.
We are all grateful for your service.
