People living in Bermondsey are to get a £10m upgrade on their electricity supply.
UK Power Networks is beginning work on a new electricity supply point on Verney Road to increase capacity and meet growing demand in the area. The project is already underway and should be finished by 2024.
Population in the local area has grown significantly in recent years. This is projected to continue with several major building developments planned or ongoing. Electricity upgrades are needed to avoid blackouts from the extra demand.
Engineers will also decommission older electricity cables in the area, UK Power Networks said.
Damian Conroy, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “This area is home to regeneration and new investment so ensuring the lights are kept on for all is vital. That’s why we are making a significant investment into this project.
“We are working in partnership with our alliance of contractors to support the substantial increase that will be required in capacity to distribute power across this busy area.”
