A man in his fifties has died after being ‘found unresponsive in the swimming pool’ at Rotherhithe’s Seven Islands Leisure Centre on Tuesday evening.
The emergency services rushed to the leisure centre on Lower Road shortly after six o’clock yesterday where they found the unresponsive man.
He was taken to hospital but sadly was pronounced dead at 7.10pm, police said.
Enquiries are ongoing to inform his next-of-kin, said officers.
At this early stage, police are treating the death as “unexplained but not suspicious.”
A file will be prepared for the coroner, while the council has been informed, said officers.
No further details were provided about the man’s identity.
The centre currently remains closed today (Wednesday, May 1), but declined to give further details.
“Due to an ongoing investigation we cannot provide any information at this time,” said Mark Basker, of Everyone Active, which runs the centre.
In an update posted on the businesses’ social media, the centre said it would be closed all day “due to unforeseen circumstances.”
Southwark Council also warned on its social media that the centre would be closed for the day.
In a statement, the London Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to reports of a “person unwell” shortly after six o’clock.
“We sent a number of resources to the scene including our hazardous area response team (HART) and an incident response officer,” the spokesperson said.
“We treated a man at the scene and took him to hospital.”
