Students at a Bermondsey school took part in a range of football-related activities after raising money for a cancer charity to show their support for the England team ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2020 final.
Perhaps tempting fate before England take on Italy, children at Compass School on Drummond Road competed in a penalty shootout, following a £1,200 fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Godsfavour from Year 8 won the shootout. He said: “I’m over the moon! The pressure was on in that last round so I went for power.”
Losing finalist Sam, also from Year 8, said: “I’m sick as a parrot to come so close and lose with the last shot. Hopefully England go one better on Sunday.”

Gareth Southgate’s men progressed to the final after beating Denmark 2-1, with the nail-biting semi final going to extra time.
Marcus Huntley, the school’s principal, said: “We are all excited for Sunday and we will be willing the team to bring it home within the 90 minutes but, just in case, we are practising our penalties. We all be right behind Southgate’s boys on Sunday”.
Year 10 student Maddison added: “”We need to recapture the spirit of ‘66 and bring it home for an extra bank holiday Monday. COME ON ENGLAND!”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under pressure to grant workers a bank holiday if England win the final – which would be their first tournament victory since the World Cup in 1966.

A spokesperson for the government said officials did not want to tempt fate by making promises ahead of the game. “Clearly we want England to go all the way and win the final, and then we will set out our plans in due course,” they said.
