Work begins on the latest section of the new south-east London cycle path between Rotherhithe and Deptford this coming Monday, August 16, ushering in months of traffic disruption.
Evelyn Street will be closed eastbound from Bestwood Street to Oxestalls Road from the end of August to November 7 this year, according to Transport for London (TfL), with signposted diversions in place. There will also be short sections of eastbound lane closure further east in Deptford from August until next year.
The new cycle lane is part of Cycleway 4, which will eventually form an uninterrupted, mostly protected, cycle link between Tower Bridge and Greenwich. Sections from Tower Bridge to Rotherhithe and in Creek Lane in Deptford have already been completed.
TfL and mayor Sadiq Khan want to boost the number of people using bikes as the country emerges out of the Covid-19 pandemic to help increase the health and fitness of the capital’s population and lower air pollution.
The transport agency warned of the disruption caused by this latest project and advised drivers to look for other routes where possible. A letter sent to local residents this week sets out the details of the road closures due to the building of the new bike lane.

Nick Fairholme, TfL’s director of project and programme delivery, said: “Ensuring that people have sustainable options for travel is an essential part of the capital’s recovery from coronavirus, and this next section of Cycleway 4 will make it even easier for adults, children and families to cycle around Deptford and beyond.
“We’d like to thank people in the area for their patience as construction work continues and advise people using local roads to leave more time for their journeys.”
Heidi Alexander, deputy mayor for transport, added: “Thousands of people are already benefitting from new and upgraded cycle routes across London, and the next phase of Cycleway 4 will make a huge difference to those cycling around Deptford. Making it easier to walk and cycle in the capital is key to a green and sustainable recovery from the pandemic, and it’s really exciting that this key route between central London and Greenwich is going to be improved.”
Anyone else notice the part missing from this false comment

Its this bit
‘Whilst we continue to make road using an absolute nightmare for local people and local business’, you can rest assured that we honestly couldnt give a toss about the consequences or your opinions. If we want to waste millions that we say we havent got on pointless cycle lanes that increase pollution in other parts of the borough then so be it. You will do as you are told you nasty little working class oiks’
This is fantastic news. Can’t wait to try it out with my children when it’s open. I am looking forward to being able to do more of my journeys by bike and leave the car at home.
Great news! I love these cycle lanes, I can ride from Welling to the City without getting killed! We need more cycle lanes like this.
