A sports and athletics centre is opening up on the southern end of Southwark Park next month.
The Southwark Park Sports and Athletics Centre has been under construction for some time and is due to open on November 6. The centre will have cardio, fixed weight, functional training machines and other equipment, as well as fitness classes
The new centre, right by the 400m running track near the Hawkstone Road entrance to the park, has had £2.6m in investment from Southwark Council.
The building is fully accessible and designed specifically for people in wheelchairs to use, the council said. The centre will also host disability sessions and will be home to London City Runners and Southwark Athletics Club, who will be putting on a rage of sessions to suit all abilities.
The centre will also be open to Everyone Active will run the centre for the council, although its leisure centre contract in Southwark runs out in 2023. The company will be speaking to local schools about using the centre and putting on sports days there.
Cllr Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure, said: “We are delighted to bring this brand new sports centre to local people and clubs. We hope that it will help aspiring athletes achieve their dreams and encourage local people to try something new, become more active and have fun.”
The centre was used by the Team GB Olympic men’s and women’s sprint relay team before they went off to Tokyo this summer.
