Celebrate the launch of two newArtist Flags for Southwark Park, by artist Habib Hajallie, supported by Omni Colour.
Launched annually to celebrate Black History Month, the two flags created using new pen drawings and collage by the Kent-based artist are titled Wampanoag Power and The British Dream.
Both flags draw on Habib’s research undertaken during his residency at Southwark Park Galleries in August 2021 as part of the national Mayflower 400 Project, marking the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower ship’s journey from nearby Rotherhithe via Plymouth to North America. The artist residency programme, supported by Southwark Council, British Land, and United St Saviours, was based in our Bermondsey Bothy and critically retraced the Mayflower story; examining its current resonances by addressing the themes of tolerance, migration, enterprises and community.
The flag launch takes place within a special day across both galleries as we mark the last day of our Autumn exhibition programme, including a durational live performance by Rebecca Lennon at our Dilston Gallery (11-5pm, free no booking required) and an exhibition tour at Lake Gallery of Trouble in Outer Heaven by curator Jamie Sutcliffe and exhibiting artist Kitty Clark from 3-4pm (free, no booking required).
