Nearly 50 trees have been planted by Southwark Council and Canada Water developers British Land.
The tree-planting in the Rotherhithe, North Bermondsey and Surrey Docks wards is the start of a wider plan to put in 1,250 trees in the neighbourhood alongside the building work.
The council has invested £5m overall in planting 10,000 trees this year. Some 2,000 trees were lost in the borough from 2010-2020.
Climate emergency: Southwark lost nearly 2,000 trees in a decade
Councillor Johnson Situ, then-cabinet member for climate emergency, planning and transport, said: “In Southwark we are busy fulfilling our commitment to plant 10,000 new trees, to add to the 82,000 already in our care.
“We understand the value of trees in creating homes for wildlife, protecting against flooding, filtering our air and adding nature, life and beauty to local neighbourhoods. We welcome the contribution that British Land’s 1,250 trees will make to our bold, new tree planting plans for Southwark.”
British Land said they would talk with local people to work out where to plant the rest of the trees.
