Cleaners at Maudlsey Hospital are set to go on strike this month in their battle for a living wage and fairer sick pay arrangements.
The Maudlsey cleaners and hostesses will be among 175 members of the GMB union, who will also stage walkouts from hospitals in Lambeth, Lewisham and Beckenham.
A date has yet to be confirmed, but the ballot saw 97 per cent of the Maudsley cleaners vote in favour of the walk out.
The cleaners, whose hourly wage is £7.38, and receive 10 days of sick pay, are employed by Aramark, a multinational company whose 2014-15 profit was $1.4bn.
Nadine Houghton, GMB regional organiser said: “By voting in favour of strike action, our members have shown they are serious about fighting for something any worker should be entitled to: a wage they can live on and a sick pay scheme which ensures they won’t be forced into poverty from falling ill.
“Aramark make a profit by paying workers as little as possible. GMB members in Maudlsey are now saying enough is enough and that they should be rewarded properly for the work they do.”
