The Albert Arms pub was left smoke-damaged after a fire in the early hours of Good Friday.
Six fire engines and 35 fire officers were called to the pub in Garden Row at about 5am.
Station manager Stuart Grout was at the scene. He said: “On my arrival the pub was heavily smoke logged and the fire was still in the basement.
“Firefighters worked hard to extinguish it. Fortunately all the residents were evacuated from the pub and the properties above it, so there are no reported injuries.”
The fire was over by about 7am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
