Residents on Bermondsey’s ‘World Cup estate’ had to abandon their festivities during England’s semi-final clash after a group of youths reportedly turned up and caused a disturbance.

Police were called to the Kirby Estate, off Southwark Park Road, at 7.46pm yesterday, Wednesday, to reports of “a disturbance involving a large number of youths throwing chairs”.

Residents had been watching England’s clash against Croatia on a giant screen on the estate but had to abandon it at half time after the trouble began.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told the News: “Police were called at 7.46pm on Wednesday, July 11, to reports of a disturbance in Southwark Park Road SE16 involving a large number of youths throwing chairs.

“Officers attended. The groups dispersed and no offences were disclosed.”

It was a disappointing end to the World Cup festivities for those on the Kirby Estate, who had shown true community spirit in pulling together to cheer England on during each match, and even going viral after covering the entire estate in 300 red and white flags.

England was sadly knocked out in the semi-final last night, after a 2-1 defeat to Croatia during extra time.

The last time England reached a World Cup semi-final was in 1990, before some of the players on the young team were even born, and the last time the nation won a World Cup final was in 1966 against West Germany.
