Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins will be returning as celebrity judge of this year’s Walworth Community Garden Show at the end of June.
Held on Saturday, June 29, the Walworth Garden Show is one of many attractions at the annual Pasley Park Fete, a free family-friendly community event.
There will be prizes for pictures of gardens, balconies, window boxes and even your local parks, including a donation from Elephant and Castle’s Italian food market; Mercato Metropolitano.
Entries from community garden groups, schools, allotments or individuals are all welcome, as are examples as small as a prize flower, salad or bunch of herbs, say the organisers, who hope to get as many examples as possible for the best flower and vegetable categories.
There will also be the chance to learn how to make a flower crown – and enter a prize competition.
Chris Collins will act as celebrity judge, and also be on hand with tips during Gardeners’ Question Time.
The day also includes music, dance, a dog show, donkey rides, games, face painting, arts and crafts, free popcorn and candyfloss.
Pasley Park began life as the Surrey Zoological Garden in the 1830s when it was home to 170 animal and plant species and attracted around 8,000 visitors a day.
Although the gardens were eventually built over, a small park remains with two ostrich stone sculptures serving as a reminder of its exotic past.
The free fete is an annual event, held by community group, the Friends of Pasley Park, with funding from Southwark Council, North Southwark Environmental Trust and St Saviour’s Charity.
Peta Steel, chair of the Friends of Pasley Park said: “We are very proud and grateful to have received these grants towards what has become an important local community event which brings us all together.
“We are looking forward to having two wonderful sessions of fun and games, with the addition of being able to learn a bit more about our own local history.”
Pasley Park fete opens at midday and runs until 5pm on June 29, all free, at Pasley Park, Manor Place/ Chapter Road, SE17 3ES. The dog show runs from 2-3pm.
