Southwark Council will consult on proposed burial spaces in Camberwell New Cemetery until July 22, to help shape the design and layout of new burial spaces near Honor Oak Park Station.

The location used to be a garden nursery and is closed to public use, but the plans now include bringing it back into public use and providing 1,000 burial spaces in recognition of a London-wide shortage.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Realm, said: “The council’s aim is to create a long term sustainable solution to burial services.

“This will take some time to develop and we’ll need local people to help shape this vision, but in the meantime the old nursery site within Camberwell New Cemetery provides a short term solution to ensure the service continues as normal.

“I hope as many people as possible feed into the consultation and shape what the new site will look like.”

There has been opposition to the plans for the site, however, with concerns that it may not be the best use of the land.

The campaign group Save Southwark Woods, Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries, have recently launched a competition to come up with alternate ideas for what it could be turned into, to be presented to the council.
