Street entertainer and actor Mike Raffone is hosting a weekly ‘Lockdown Bingo’ for SE17 with John Whelan, from Southwark Playhouse’s People’s Company.
Described as the ‘perfect antidote to the stuck indoors blues’, ‘rip-roaring’ and ‘the maddest online bingo in show in town’, the weekly event is free to watch via Facebook live-stream…and includes prizes!
Players have even joined from as far afield as New Zealand.
On top of bingo, the People’s Company have held a Cockney Knees Up, a Sing-a-long, and a local history quiz with the Walworth Society and have a cabaret show lined up for Saturday via Zoom.
Whelan says many events with the playhouse, including a special Mayflower anniversary project, have been postponed due to the pandemic, leaving actors and creatives keen to find new ways to support the community and provide a creative outlet during lockdown.
“People love the bingo and tell me it’s the highlight of their week,” he told the News.
“It’s a social event and we’ll carry on as long as people need to shield at home.
“Working with Mike Raffone has been great, it’s a way for us at the People’s Company to continue being creative, and give something back to the community even when our events are cancelled or pushed back.
“We all need a giggle and science has shown that laughter helps relieve stress and tension and supports your immune system!”
