Grosvenor submits £500m Bermondsey masterplan to council

Grosvenor has submitted its plans to redevelop the area around the former Peek Frean biscuit factory in Bermondsey

Grosvenor has submitted its £500million masterplan for Bermondsey to the council.

If approved, the development is expected to provide up to 1,343 purpose-built rental homes, almost 2,500 jobs, and office, retail, and leisure space.

The current Compass School, currently on the former Lewisham and Southwark College site on Drummond Road, would be demolished and moved into a purpose-built 600-place school elsewhere on the same site, but closer to Bermondsey station.

The proposals show the development would also feature two new pedestrian routes through the railway arches, including a reinstated section of Keeton’s Road which would provide a direct footpath from Bermondsey underground station to the Blue.

Buildings will range in height up to 28 storeys and flats would range in size from studios to three bedrooms.

Grosvenor is proposing to provide 27.5 per cent of homes at discount market rent for people living and working in Bermondsey and across Southwark.

The property company said three quarters of those who gave feedback to the final plans, which went on show to the public recently, confirmed their support, compared to nine per cent who opposed the plans, and seventeen per cent who were neutral.

“Many local residents have taken part in that process and helped us to develop proposals we believe would provide a major boost to Bermondsey. We are very grateful for their input and guidance.

“Our proposals signal our long-term commitment to Bermondsey. We believe this plan could revitalise the neighbourhood, provide much-needed, professionally-managed rental homes for Londoners, encourage enterprise, and re-establish Bermondsey as a thriving economic centre in Southwark.”
