Hundreds of Peckham residents were left without gas last week after a council contractor damaged a pipe with a digger – with many still having to live without gas.
Some residents at Gloucester Grove Estate have been unable to use gas appliances since Friday afternoon, when the mains were cracked while a heating system was being fixed.
Roughly 100 properties were originally affected, with gas so far restored to 47 homes. Alternate cooking and heating sources have been offered to homes still without gas and the council is “looking at” offering compensation.
Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark cabinet member for housing, apologised on behalf of the council and re-assured residents that work was being done to fix the problem.
He said: “We are working hard with SGN and our contractors to restore supplies as soon as possible, although due to the nature of the problem we aren’t able to give exact dates for this just yet.
“I appreciate this must be frustrating for residents but we are keeping everyone updated as much as possible.
“I would like to reassure residents that full safety checks have been made and thank everyone for their patience during the repair work.”
