Camberwell-born England football star Jadon Sancho has joined Manchester United, after months of speculation.
Sancho, 21, moved to the Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund, whom he signed for in 2017 as an unproven teenager. He made 137 appearances for the German club in all competitions, scoring 50 goals and assisting 64 more, and is considered one of the best young attacking players in the world.
Manchester United announced the deal on Friday (July 23), with Sancho signing a five-year contract with an option for a year’s extension.
He said: “I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day. The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League.
“This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve. I am looking forward to working with the Manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”
Jadon Sancho: Euro 2020 star to be awarded Freedom of Southwark
Sancho came through the youth academy of Manchester United’s rivals Manchester City, although he never made a competitive first-team appearance for the side.
He helped England get to the final of Euro 2020, making three appearances off the bench. He was one of three players who missed penalties in the shootout against Italy and was forced to endure racist abuse in the aftermath.
In recognition of Sancho’s efforts, Southwark Council announced earlier this month that it intended to give him the freedom of the borough.
