The Jarr Market will begin shunning the usage of single-use packing and welcome their first customers this Saturday (July 13), writes Hillary Chaisson…
With the goal to reduce waste in mind, the shop will sell a wide range of consumer goods and products free from packaging.
Customers are invited to bring their own containers or purchase them directly from Jarr.
Goods will be priced according to weight, ensuring shoppers can buy as much or as little as they need when visiting.
Reusable coffee cups and water bottles will also be on sale, to help those attempting to live a sustainable lifestyle.
And their emphasis on sustainability extends to sourcing local and organic products when possible.
Jarr also plans to host events, workshops, and pop-ups that will focus around learning to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
This is the second packaging-free store to open in Herne Hill and the third in Southwark.
Naked Larder was set last year in a garage in Herne Hill, selling dry goods – like nuts, grains, cereals and sugar – and cleaning products.
And in BYO (Bring Your Open), an eco-friendly food shop in Nunhead, also opened last year stocking a range of dry goods, deli foods, and lifestyle products.
Local and Jarr founder, Jessica Rimoch, said: “I have always been committed to reducing my environmental impact.
“However, [in the past] I have found it hard to find alternatives to local supermarkets, which use a huge amount of packaging and single-use plastics. By opening Jarr Market, I am taking matters into my own hands.
“I am excited to be opening in such a vibrant community, and look forward to helping others who want to live a sustainable lifestyle.”
Jarr Market will open its doors on Saturday, 13th of July at 10am.
Regular hours for the Jarr Market will be: Tuesday to Friday (10 am – 6 pm), Saturday (10 am to 5 pm) and Sunday (11 am to 4 pm).
