One of the borough’s largest free family festivals is set to return to Burgess Park next week, with a massive funfair planned and musicians and dancers gearing up to perform to the crowds.

The Elephant and The Nun festival has a jam packed programme, including an African market, arts and crafts for Saturday, August 15, from 12pm to 8pm. Last year, over 10,000 people attended.

The Global Local stage will host the best of Southwark-grown musical talent, as well as emerging artists from across London and the UK. The Africa Live Festival will also be taking place, bringing the best of African culture with African-influenced goods, arts and craft, fashion, holistic therapies, live music and cuisine.

This year’s festival will also welcome back Kinetika Bloco, a performance group that mixes young brass and woodwind players, drummers, steel pan and dynamic dancers.

Children are also in for a treat with the interactive performances of Bouncing Cats and Boom Boom Pups. For children aged four to ten and their parents, children can go on a journey with spoken word artist Maxwell Golden and graffiti artist Mr Dane into the world of AnimaLand where beat box, rap and graffiti come together.

There will also be a variety of stalls offering art and crafts, charity, food and drink. Second hand market Rumble in the Jumble is returning, offering shoppers the chance of a bargain. Bikes in Burgess will also be featuring several bike-based activities including pedal-powered Scalextric and smoothie making, plus a junior cycling track and mini BMX track.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business, Employment and Culture: “The Elephant and The Nun festival is a real cultural explosion right in the heart of Southwark and a highlight of our summer events programme that’s not to be missed. People from all over the community look forward to this event to get out in their borough and enjoy local talent in one of our best public spaces. This year line-up of entertainment is truly wonderful and it certainly won’t disappoint. I’m sure lots of people will be there to see what’s fresh and new at this year’s festival.”
