With just days left for an urban park, which would run along a disused railway line in Peckham, to hit its fundraising target, Southwark Council has pledged £10,000.

Thousands of pledges had already raised £50,000 towards the Peckham Coal Line but the contribution announced by Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, will take the campaign within £6,000 of their £65,000 crowd-funding target.

“The Peckham Coal Line is an inspired, creative and community driven project that the council is very happy to support,” said Cllr Williams. “While we are primarily focused on delivering the homes and jobs that Peckham and neighbouring areas need, we know that bricks and mortar are not the only things that bind a community.

“It’s brilliant that local people are coming up with really innovative ideas like this to enhance the area for everyone who lives there as well as for visitors, and we are keeping our fingers firmly crossed that the Peckham Coal Line hits its target by the end of the month,” he added.

Nunhead-based architect, Nick Woodford, who has pioneered the  grass-roots campaign, said: “We are delighted that Southwark Council will be joining us on this exciting journey. Their support, advice and guidance will be invaluable as we create a new community-led approach to our shared open space.”
