Residents have less than a week to have their say on a Korean Pop festival scheduled to take place in July in Southwark Park, writes Simon Throssell…
The MIK K-Pop Festival will be ‘the first of its kind in the UK’ and will celebrate the growing popularity of Korean pop music around the world.
The organisers, Proud Events, have chosen Southwark as the ‘perfect home’ for the festival because of the area’s ‘excellent transport links and diverse community.’
The multi-stage event is scheduled to take place from Saturday 24th to Sunday 25th July 2021 with expected audiences of up to 12,000 per day.
An application has been put in for a premises licence which will allow up to 14,999 people to attend.
In their consultation deck, Proud Events outlined their five key priorities for the festival:
- Making sure the event delivers local benefits through advertisement opportunities and discounted tickets
- Managing noise from the show by designing an appropriate sound system
- Managing attendee flow by encouraging the use of public transport and introducing customer flow procedures
- Minimising green space used within the park by extending the arena building process out for as long as possible so that the general public can still use the park normally
- Consideration for local ecology by taking necessary precautions to protect the trees and green space of the park
Some residents have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, including one user who used the hashtag #ItsANoToKPop.
Another questioned whether a “festival of unvaccinated K-pop teens in your backyard is a good idea”
You have until 10th March to send in your support, or objections to, the event going ahead via email events@southwark.gov.uk
Sounds horrendous with such a large amount of people that could attend. I don’t think the park is large enough to deal with an event like this. Restrictions probably won’t be in place but I think it’s too soon for an event like this. I would think for residents living by the park will find the noise level intolerable
