A man who had been due to stand trial charged with assisting an offender in the murder of Bermondsey man Rocky Djelal has died in prison.
Jason O’Rourke, 34, passed away while in custody at Belmarsh prison on April 2, the Prison Service told the News last week.
“HMP Belmarsh prisoner Jason O’Rourke died in prison on 2 April 2019 and our thoughts are with his family and friends,” said a spokesman for the Prison Service.
“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman confirmed to the paper that it has opened an investigation into the death of Mr O’Rourke, as is standard procedure.
However the report will not be published until after an inquest has taken place.
Mr Djelal was murdered close to the children’s play area in Southwark Park on Halloween last year.
