A man has been charged with the murder of Sergeant Matt Ratana, who died while on duty in Croydon Custody Centre.
The police officer, who also worked at Walworth station, was fatally shot on September 25, 2020.
Twenty-three-year-old Louis de Zoysa, from Banstead, Surrey, was charged yesterday with the officer’s murder, as well as possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
Since the incident, de Zoysa has remained in hospital with gunshot wounds and is under police guard. He is in a stable, non-life threatening condition.
In a statement published today (June 30) the Met confirmed that recent changes to his condition and a decision by the CPS had resulted in the charge being taken forward.
He appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court earlier today (Wednesday, June 30) via video link from his hospital bed.
