A Millwall fan who was put into an induced coma after suffering a cardiac arrest at a match is now awake.

Antony Murphy was “dead for nine minutes” after he had a cardiac arrest at Millwall’s clash with Northampton at the Den on Friday, April 14.

The 40-year-old, originally from Bermondsey but living in Kent, was rushed to hospital and put in a medically induced coma.

But friends Jonathan Smith and John Kendall said he had woken up and was blinking and yawning when they visited him in hospital on Tuesday, April 25.

“We’ve had some improvements,” said Jonathan. “He has his eyes open and he’s yawning, and when we talk, he blinks.

“But he has still got a breathing machine assisting him and we’re taking it one day at a time.”

A group of Antony’s friends set up a Just Giving page to help the 40-year-old, who is a full-time carer to his dad, which has now raised £3,295.

Antony’s dad, who has a heart condition, was also taken to hospital where he remains.

“We’ve had support from West Ham, Northampton, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Millwall and they say at a time like this colours and badges are out the window and it’s football supporters united,” said Jonathan.

“We had seven buckets at Millwall on Saturday but we won’t know how much we’ve raised until the end of the week,” John added.

“We are going to go and see his dad who has been moved from intensive care to a ward.”

The friends added that Millwall had agreed to give them some signed shirts and footballs for a fundraising event they intend to hold in the summer.
