Sending our condolences to all of the Dyer family, friends and staff. I have known Barry since 1962/63, we were friends at secondary school. I can honestly say that Barry was one of the most, genuine, down to earth, caring people I have ever had the pleasure in knowing. We have lost a true gentleman and an absolute star RIP Barry. A couple of years ago we interviewed Barry as part of a project about how Bermondsey had changed since the war. What people told us was made into a show performed at the Biscuit Factory. He generously took the time to give a great interview which included this speech – which was said right at the end of the play – it shows his connection with people and his love for the area…
When I was a kid and I walked along Tanner Street, all I could smell was the hide, the
leather. As I walked up Bermondsey Street there were other smells, because you had where they made mink, which were quite vile smells, then you walked further up and you had the perfume factory. Then you’d get to Pearson Duffs and you had the custard stewing, you know. Then you’d get to the Blue and have Edwards or Spa bakery with that lovely bread smell, then you’d get to where the biscuits were being baked, coconut on a Thursday, bournville on a Friday, you know. So everything in this area is summed up with smells. There are new smells now. There’s the Mogul I can smell, with the lovely spices as you go passed.
There is the Turkish bakery at the back of the shop opposite. The smells are still there. The smells are just different. And the people are just different.
Barry you are a true legend.
I have had the utter most respect for you from the way
you ran your business up to the true gentleman that you are.
You respectively showed true loyalty, professionalism and
compassion to all, including the bereavement of members of my family, friends
and of course Buster.
At this sad time my thoughts are with your family and
everyone at Albins. Both of your sons are a credit to you.
R.I.P. Barry.

Barry has been our first Patron of Friends of Bede since helping us with our 70th Anniversary Celebrations in 2008. He was Master of Ceremonies at our gala dinner, when a marquee was erected beside Bede Centre and people gathered to share memories of how
Bede had influenced their lives. There was plenty of fun and laughter that
evening, and Barry’s witty and masterful management of the programme was
captured in our film “Sum of Us All”. When I watched it again recently, I
was reminded how special that evening was, and how well Barry set the tone for
a wonderful celebration of Bede’s place in the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe
community.
Last time I saw Barry, it was a chance meeting in Pete’s Bakery in the Blue. He was there in his F A Albin’s tee-shirt buying lunch for colleagues. We exchanged a joke, and he included my cheese roll in “his round”. It was a typically generous gesture and I promised
the next one would be on me. Sadly, that chance has now gone.
We can be very grateful that, in his busy life, Barry shared some of his time with us. We are proud, too, that he held Bede in such high esteem that, as Patron of Friends of Bede he wrote: “Bede is one of those wonderful foundations that bring tradition, love and
comfort. I urge you with me, to help and support Bede in its continued growth.
It is without doubt a “Jewel in our Crown”.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and colleagues during these sad days.
