A Sydenham man has been charged with the murder of a woman that took place nearly 50 years ago.
John Apelgren, 79, was arrested on Wednesday (June 22) and charged the same day with murdering Eileen Cotter in 1974, when he was in his early 30s.
Ms Cotter was just 22 when her body was found in front of some garages behind Hamilton Park in Highbury, in north London, on June 1 that year. The cause of death was strangulation.
The murder investigation at the time did not result in anyone being charged.
Apelgren, of Bryden Close, was also charged with indecent assault of a different woman in 1972. He is due in Bromley Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, June 23).
