Question: can you pump up anything? Prepare to ask yourself that a lot this summer thanks to surefire smash hit ‘I Like To Pump’, a funk fuelled homage to all-things inflatable that will launch with a world exclusive performance at Saturday’s Bermondsey Carnival, writes Cara Cummings…

Produced by an international team including local arts entrepreneur Rob Wray – founder of Shortwave Cafe, Long Wave Bar and annual culture festival Elefest – the instantly catchy celebration of inflation looks set to become the soundtrack of the summer.

It’s video, shot in Madrid and stuffed with poolside dance-offs, inflatable unicorns and a lycra-clad cameo from Rob himself, has already racked up thousands of views on YouTube.

The track is even sparking an online catchphrase, with fans proudly sharing: ‘I like to pump’.

Next weekend will see front men Gerhard Steiger and Berthold Doffler – aka Gertie and Bertie – bounce into Bermondsey with their backing dancers for I Like To Pump’s first ever live performance.

“Together we created 197 seconds that can keep you happy all day,” says pump-star Gerhard.

“For the first time ever, the world will get to see and experience The Pump in Southwark Park.”

But don’t be fooled by the sunkissed silliness of its premise – according to Gerhard, The Pump is a whole new positive philosophy.

“For the last 7 years I have been developing a system that can bring you instant joy,” he says.

“With help from scientists, poets, DJs, gurus, athletes, musicians and dancers we have done just that.

“We can’t wait for this massive group Pump to start the happy revolution…”

Bermondsey Carnival takes place in Southwark Park on Saturday, July 6th from noon until 8pm.
