Bookworms at a Rotherhithe school will soon benefit from a £6,500 grant towards more books in the school library in the next few months.

The Foyle Foundation grant for the library at Bacon’s College, on Timber Pond Road, caps a year of projects for the school’s library, which has seen pupils raise over £1,000 towards books on hospital wards.

The children at the secondary school have also been involved in a ‘Battle of the Books’ competition to vote for their favourite book, which took place during World Book Day.

“We believe that encouraging a life-long love of reading is one of the most valuable things we can do as a school to give our students the best chances in life,” said the school librarian.

“We are extremely grateful to the Foyle Foundation for awarding us this money, which will be a fantastic boost for student reading just before the summer.”

The grant will also go towards a new library management system to keep track of books, said the school.

Bacon’s College Principal, James Wilson, said: “Being able to invest in our library at such a crucial time of year sends a real message to our students about how much we care about books.”

He added: “I’m confident we can build on this momentum to continue to encourage a love of reading for the whole school community.”
