Results Day 2020: Three Ark Globe students secure Oxbridge places – including first to study medicine

Ark Globe Academy says it is celebrating ‘excellent A level results despite the impact of COVID-19. 

The Elephant and Castle Academy is sending its first student to study medicine and has three successful Oxbridge places,  as well as many students securing their first-choice universities. 

The Principal, Matt Jones, said: “In what has been an extraordinary and unusual academic year, it is pleasing to see the vast majority of our students have secured their first-choice destination with three students off to Oxbridge. 

“The students’ success is a result of their hard work prior to the COVID-19 lockdown and the wonderful support offered by the dedicated adults at Ark Globe Academy.”

High achievers include Kirsten Martey-Botchway with her A* in Chemistry, A* in Physics, A in Maths. She has previously appeared in the News after her impressive GCSEs. She has been accepted into Corpus Christi College, Cambridge to study Medicine. 

Kirsten, from Walworth, has been interested in Medicine for a long time. She published an article in Year Ten on public health which explored past research on nutrition and underlined that health inequalities are still a problem in the UK despite advancement in healthcare. 

“I am really happy and proud of myself. I would like to thank all of the staff at Ark Globe for the support they have given me over the years,” she said. 

“My time at Globe has been really valuable and I have gained lots of skills I can use at the university. 

“I am now going to continue my preparation for university ready for September. I am also looking forward to coming back to Globe to encourage younger students to apply for Medicine.”

Lauren Lopez

Lauren Lopez received A*A*A*in English, History and Sociology and has been accepted into Emmanuel College, Cambridge to study Theology and Religious Studies

Former head girl Lauren has also appeared in this paper previously. An ex-singer and she was also part of Globe Poets (the slam poetry collective at Ark Globe. 

Lauren, from Peckham,  is described by the school as being ‘like an international ambassador of the Ark Globe community’. 

She travelled to San Francisco with the poetry club, and has also visited France and Belgium for music performances and Germany for a history trip. 

She says she would like to have a film and journalism related career.

“I am in a state of shock,” she said. 

“ When I saw my results, all I could do was laugh. I didn’t know how to react. But it is slowly sinking in, I am just really relieved.

“After I got the grades, I called my dad. In the background, I heard my mum screaming. I texted my brothers, cousins and friend. They are all very happy.

“With the Covid-19 situation, I was anxious for the last couple of months. But there was nothing I could do about it. I accepted last night that I will get my grades and whatever will happen will happen.

“I am very excited about university life and to become involved in any societies related to film. I also want to be a part of a language club.

“I was a Globe student since Year Seven. I feel very much supported, Especially in Sixth Form.  

“Teachers are always there for you, to help you get better. The friendships you can make here really will ground you. 

“We are all very ambitious, but everyone supports each other. The time we spent here was a mixture of sitting down to revise as well as relaxing. 

“I have missed being with my friends in the Sixth Form area. This is a calm, nice and funny place to be.”
