A 20-year-old man has been confirmed dead following a two-way motorcycle collision on the Elephant and Castle roundabout at 3.30pm.
The victim was first taken to a south London hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries. His death was confirmed at 5.37pm and his next of kin have been informed.
The second motorcyclist received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
The fatal collision is believed to have happened at the junction with Newington Causeway.
Police had closed the Newington Causeway, London Road, and the Borough Road and Harper Road junction to make way for the air ambulance.
Severe traffic delays were reported in the area, but roads are now clear and traffic is flowing as normal.
Police are now appealing for witness to provide evidence.
No arrests have been made.
Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Catford investigate and ask anyone with information to contact them on 020 8285 1574.
Thanks Tfl. Your stupid road scheme is now killing people
I agree with marmite, have been cycling through the Elephant to work since 2005, am now much more wary of the junction than when it was two roundabouts. Southbound, cars are kept in the middle lane and then have to cut across cyclists to turn left onto Walworth road, as well as busses trying to pull out right from the bus stop. Very dangerous for cyclists. The junction where the above accident happened is worse now too, it’s bit of a free-for-all when the lights change. There’s loads more congestion too, for both cars and cyclists. It’s now more dangerous and more congested than it ever used to be.
