Campaigners have “cautiously welcomed” news that BT plans to expand its high-speed broadband into the peninsula.
Around 18,000 properties across the borough, including a large number in Rotherhithe’s cyber slow-lane, will now benefit from faster internet speeds. The area has been a challenging area for internet due to its dated communications cables.
Pauline Adenwalla, Chair of the Rotherhithe Broadband Group, said: “We welcome this much needed investment in the communication infrastructure of the area that the community has pressed for. This is the first step, by BT, in providing better broadband speeds in the area, but the community campaign will go on to continue to press for the rest of the area to be upgraded”
The high-speed fibre broadband will be rolled out to new residences over the next two years.
