The Rotherhithe Tunnel will be closed for five days next week for “critical” fire safety repairs.
The major route will be closed between 10am Monday 11 to 5am Saturday, January 16. TfL says the closure is needed to repair the tunnel’s fire water main so that the hydrants work if there is a fire.
The tunnel will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists.
“Safety is our top priority, and this urgent five-day closure of the Rotherhithe Tunnel is essential to ensure the tunnel remains safe for people to use,” said Glynn Barton of TfL.
”I’d like to ask people in the area who need to travel to plan ahead for their journeys and continue to follow the vital safety restrictions which remain in place at the tunnel.”
Traffic will be encouraged to use the Blackwall Tunnel and Tower Bridge instead. The City of London will also be carrying out works on Southwark Bridge, closing the crossing southbound from January 11 to February 22.
Traffic will be diverted via Upper Thames Street, Puddle Dock, Queen Victoria Street, Blackfriars Bridge, Blackfriars Road and Southwark Street.?
