About 700 people who work in Southwark care homes got a £100 voucher from the council as a thank you for their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cllr Evelyn Akoto, the council’s cabinet member for health, visited care homes across the borough on Friday (December 3) to deliver the vouchers and thank care home workers.
She said: “These unprecedented past two years have been incredibly hard on so many people, but I especially want to thank everyone who looks after others. Their selfless energy to support other people is inspirational and all of us who have relatives in care are truly grateful for all they do for our loved ones.”
The vouchers can be used in various different shops, including supermarkets. It wasn’t just carers were given the vouchers -all staff in care homes got them, including cleaners, cooks and other support workers.
One of the care home managers, whose staff will receive the vouchers, said: “We are delighted to hear about this scheme. It makes a big difference for our care home staff when they get recognition for the amazing work they do. Thank you so much Southwark for thinking of them.”
Care homes have been hugely affected by the pandemic, with tens of thousands of residents of homes across the country dying after being infected with Covid-19.
