The rent Southwark Council charges its tenant is due to go up by 4.1 per cent this year, the second year in a row rent has gone up, and the maximum amount it can increase by.
Rents went down four years in a row before 2020, by order from the central government. Southwark’s social housing chief Stephanie Cryan said council home rents will still be the eighth-lowest among any of the London boroughs.
The increase amounts to an average change of £4.24 per week, and differs depending on the size of the property.
Service charges, garage charges, district heating and hot water charges will all also go up, as long as these changes are approved at the council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday (January 18). The rent increase will come into effect from April 4, if approved.
