Southwark’s fireworks show won’t take place this year because of coronavirus social distancing rules, writes Kit Heren…
The November display, which the council has put on in Bermondsey’s Southwark Park for sixteen years straight, has fallen foul of the government’s new rule banning group activities involving six or more people.
A spokesperson for the council said it was working to get smaller-scale activities up and running as soon as possible.
Cllr Rebecca Lury, Southwark Park cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “It is with regret that we must cancel our 2020 fireworks show.
“The health and safety of our residents comes first and this cannot be guaranteed while working to current government guidelines and laws.
“We very much hope to be re-starting other small-scale local events shortly.”
The fireworks are usually free for all residents of the borough.
